As a nation, we are looking closely at our current educational system, assessing its strengths and weaknesses, and debating what the future of education will look like. Much of that is being done with little student engagement or input. The Governor's Institute on Education: Innovation & Leadership allows Vermont teens to join a select group of approximately 35 students, a knowledgeable and dynamic faculty, and prominent members of the state and national educational community, and be a part of that discussion. The institute will spend an intense eight days on the campus of Johnson State College focusing on many aspects of this all-important issue.

Throughout the institute, students and faculty will examine education from a variety of perspectives. Students will gain insights into the raw material of education - the human mind. Students will look at what is currently occurring in education by reflecting on their own educational experiences, by participating in a forum with educational leaders from around the state, and by learning about essential educational issues and different models of education. Students will also develop their personal philosophy of education both in pictorial and written form. Each student will then create a vision of where she believes education should be headed. With these visions, students will develop personal action plans for making a difference in their educational communities. Throughout the institute, students will gain technological skills so that they may continue to contribute to the institute community on an ongoing basis throughout the year.

Although there are no typical days at the institute, students can expect to go to bed each night exhausted, having spent the day learning a lot, having fun, and developing meaningful relationships. Students will work intensely on becoming informed on different aspects of education as well as gaining and enhancing leadership skills. Many different groupings and hands-on activities will be used to help students interact with the subject and stretch their intellects. In addition to a dynamic faculty, there will be expert presenters from around the state and beyond, as well as visits from inspirational teachers chosen by students. Evenings at the institute will offer a wide range of activities, from a trip to the ballet to July 4th fireworks at Smuggler's Notch to a night of teachers' stories.

For students who are passionate about education and committed to making a difference in Vermont schools, this is the ideal summer experience. Join us for the second year of our important new program.
