- Hands-on and academic activities with Asia experts
- Opportunity to go to China the following summer
The Institute on Asian Cultures is co-sponsored with the
Asian Studies Outreach Program at the University of Vermont with a grant from the Freeman Foundation.
The Institute will focus on Chinese and Japanese cultures with introductions to other Asian cultures.
The 24 students enrolled will engage in academic and
hands-on activities with experts on Asia, Asian nationals, and experienced teachers. Topics of presentations
and workshop include history, social customs, arts, and education of China and Japan.
Taiko drumming, dancing, calligraphy, painting and other hands-on
activities will help students understand Chinese, Japanese and other Asian cultures. Students
are expected to read several articles about Asia prior to the Institute.
During the Institute, students will develop individual plans to continue their study during the year
with follow-up activities and support from faculty. The follow-up activities will help prepare students for a program in
China during the following summer with support from the Freeman Foundation. Only those in the Vermont program this summer
are eligible for the program in China next year.
