Who Are My Teachers?
Kailie Larken - Performing Arts Faculty
Kailie Larkin originally hails from Jericho, but is currently residing in Plainfield and in Middletown CT where she is a full time student at Wesleyan University. She is interested in doing as much theatre, dance, and creative writing as possible while majoring in American Studies. She one of the directors of the Get Thee to the Funnery Shakespeare Camps that take place in Chelsea and Craftsbury, VT, and has worked at the Governor's Institute on the Arts Summer Institute and the Winter Weekend for the past three years. She is currently working on a project on civil liberties and storytelling.
John Ungerleider - Current Issues & Youth Activism Faculty
John Ungerleider, Ed.D. is a Professor at the School for International Training where he teaches graduate courses in Conflict Transformation, Intercultural Communication and Organizational Behavior. John also teachers Conflict Resolution at Hampshire College and recently taught in Spain at the master's program at the Bancaja Institute for Peace and Development. In 1997-98, John was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Cyprus, coordinating bi-communal conflict resolution activities.
Willie Gould - Performing Arts Faculty
Willie Gould is a clown, actor, sketch comedian, theater director, writer, and musician from Brattleboro, VT. He is co-founder of Lunchbox, Wesleyan University´s sketch comedy group. He has trained with the Circo del Mundo in Santiago, Chile, The Marcelo Katz Clown School and Cualquier Lado Teatro in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and The Theater of the Oppressed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has also performed as a musician and clown with Teatro la Fragua in El Progreso, Honduras. In 2006 he received the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to pursue his independent project.
Jesse Ruth Corkins - Science & Engineering Faculty
Jessie is a senior at Mt. Abraham UHS. As a freshman she decided to evaluate the schools heating system and convert it to wood. After two years of research and political action the school is now heated with wood chips. Not only is this good for the environment, but it is saving the school evil amounts of money. Last year Jessie worked with a group of friends to promote biofuels in Vermont and the country. She presented twice in the State House and met with Lt. Governor Brian Dubee and Senator Sanders. Her work has been written up in the Boston Globe, the New York Times and the Washington Post.
Jasmine Lamb - Site Co-Director
Jasmine Lamb has worked at the Governor's Institute on the Arts for many years. She is a mediator, teacher, and writer. Her growing passion is in what she calls ListeningArts, which uses movement, writing, storytelling, and stillness as ways to expand our capacity to listen to ourselves and others.
Anne Watson - Science & Engineering Faculty
Anne Watson, a life-long Vermont resident, has taught physics and math at Montpelier High School for 4 years. She received a B.S. in Physics from Penn State University and subsequently a M.Ed. from UVM. She has experience working at IBM (her work there later earned her a patent) as well as the physics labs at UVM and Penn State. She was recently published in the Science Teacher magazine for an Energy Feasibility Study carried out by her physics students, which resulted in a 2.64 kW solar panel system being mounted on the school's greenhouse. Besides being a physics teacher, Anne is a musician, a kite-flyer, a person of faith, an environmental activist, and an animated laugher.
Simon Norton - Current Issues & Youth Activism Faculty
Simon is the Program Director of the GIV Current Issues and Youth Activism Institute and the Director of the School for International Training’s Youth Peacebuilding & Leadership Programs. He grew up in England, moved to Honolulu to finish high school, and has family in England, Australia and Arizona. He holds a Masters in International Education from Harvard University, and has been doing global education work for the past 15 years, working with young people from over 110 countries and all 50 U.S. states. Over the years, he has run international leadership programs and camps, taught global issues (with a special focus in global children’s issues), environmental issues & policy, politics, leadership and teambuilding, U.S. history, civics, and has consulted with various organizations and traveled extensively. He has spent a considerable amount of time working and teaching in Washington, DC, and has run experiential programs in Honolulu, Seattle, and San Francisco and many countries. Before he got into anything environmental or global, he studied at various theater schools and performed in many plays and musicals, theater is still a big passion, but his ‘stage’ has morphed to the classroom and the outdoors. Simon is also a certified sea kayak instructor, and regularly coaches youth soccer.
Peter Gould - Performing Arts Faculty
Peter Gould teaches Shakespeare and Fizzical Comedy at the Governor's Summer Institutes on the Arts. He's a youth theatre director, and veteran of nearly 4000 live performances in many corners of the world.
Sophie Wood - Site Co-Director
Sophie Wood was born and raised in Thetford Vermont. She just graduated from Hampshire College with a degree in Theatre for Social change, by zanily studying performing arts and agriculture at the same time. She is currently entertaining herself by making puppets, being a pop star, writing, dancing, and co-directing for her theatre company, The Royal Frog Ballet.
Tom Tailer - Science & Engineering Faculty
Tom has worked in Energy Education and sustainability since 1978. He has designed and built a 95% energy self sufficient house and built or installed 12 wind mills. He is currently the Co-director of the UVM Governors institute in Engineering and teaches physics at Mt. Abraham UHS. He recently returned from South Korea where he led the US team of students to the first International Earth Science Olympiad. The students won two silver medals in challenging competition. Tom's students have recently received more than $1.2 million in grant money to implement sustainability projects. His favorite classroom is a Tipi 1200 feet up morse mt. where he and his wife teach science during the ski season.
Matthew Moreau - Technology
When not plotting revolution, Matthew Moreau divides his time between web design and painting. His work in recent years focuses on the complicated relationship of humans and domesticated animals
