1997 Governor's Institutes on the Arts Alum - Karl Zahn

The above photo is of a prototype pendant light I designed. The body is made of translucent paper which is glued together in a precise pattern. This pattern determines its spherical shape and the direction in which the light will diffuse. The pattern is also created at random using my computer.
While fixed enough to keep the expansion uniform and the paper away from the hot bulb, the pattern is still very adjustable. Given the many relationships between glue joints and the degrees of their triangles, there is still a lot of freedom to alter the scale of the light, quantity of pockets, exterior shape of the pockets, and overall quality of light.
Phrena
Amaranthaceae Gomphrena Globosa: The flower which gives the Phrena its name.
I wanted the assembly of the light fixture to be as simple as opening a book. It was to be perfectly flat to begin with and through careful manipulation, a three dimensional form would take shape. I was also attracted to the concept of the material simplicity becoming complex. There are so many perameters to play with that will alter the appearance and function of the light. But at the most basic level, it is a composition of pages all working together in symmetry.
It has come a long way, but the light is finally done. Thanks to Artecnica, the Phrena light has become a reality.
