If you are a high school student in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade with a strong interest in one of our topic areas, we invite you to apply to The Governor's Institutes of Vermont. The Institutes provide an opportunity for you to study with the State's finest professionals on the campuses of Vermont colleges. While the subjects vary greatly, each Institute offers you a chance to:
  • advance your personal skills, awareness, and abilities
  • meet and study with other high school students
  • explore your career ambitions

At each Institute, you will work in small groups, receive close personal attention, and experience a hands-on approach to learning. You will be challenged to explore unfamiliar areas as well as progress in your chosen specialty.

You will study and live with students, faculty, and assistants to create an exciting, intensive, and productive community of learning. There are no tests or term papers; your motivation to learn is what determines the success of each Governor's Institute.

If you are selected to participate, you will join the ranks of over 7,000 high school students who have attended a Governor's Institute program since 1982. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Historically, one-third of our students receive scholarships each year.

Application Process

The application process is not a complicated one -- there are three easy steps to take:
  1. Do some research. Find out as much as you can about the Governor's Institutes. You want to make sure that our programs are right for you. Talk to teachers, parents, guidance counselors, or students who have attended Governor's Institute programs in the past. In addition, we are always available to answer any questions you may have concerning our programs: giv@sover.net or (802) 229-4757.

  2. Get the necessary forms. These can be printed out from this website, or can be obtained from your high school guidance counselor.

    • The application form. Make sure a parent or guardian completes her or his portion of the application.

    • The recommendation forms. Print this out twice and ask two people to fill these out -- you can choose teachers, mentors, or adult friends who you feel are best qualified to write about your interests and abilities as they relate to the Arts; Asian Cultures; Current Issues & Youth Activism; Engineering; Information Technology; Mathematics; or Science & Technology.

    • The financial aid form. Take a look at our student tuition information chart to find out how much the institutes cost. We encourage you to apply for scholarship assistance if you qualify. If you are requesting aid, please make sure to include your family's most recent tax returns with your application. If parents are filing separately, we require documentation from each.

  3. Submit your completed application to your school. Because we ask schools to submit the names of nominees to the Governor's Institutes by April 1st, most high schools have a deadline for you of March 15. Be sure to confirm your school's closing date. Find out who to ask at your school.
(Note: If you are interested in the Winter Weekend Institute, the application process is different. See that page for details.)
